8:58a | Question--Quotation Marks Question for the f-list; I have Word at home, but only and Abiword at work, and of course I can use googledocs. My problem is with quotation marks; I usually use Times New Roman and get the lovely curved quotation marks in Word, but if I bring up the document in any of these other applications, it leaves the curvy quotation marks as they are--but all the new ones are straight! I have a loathing of straight quotation marks, but I can't figure out how to change them. :( Abiword and googledocs don't seem to have a formatting option for it. It's just that I'd really like to work on alisanne's fic some more today (Boss is out!) but replacing all the quotation marks would be such a pain--and ugly. I want my pretty, curvy ones. Does anyone know how to fix this? ETA: I can't use WordPerfect either, unfortunately. |

9:54a | Hi, folks. Many of you will have read back in October (on Making Light and other blogs) about Scraps (Soren) DeSelby (aka, baldanders), a freelance copyeditor who suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. The most recent updates say that he's progressing in his convalescence (starting to walk again, etc.), but as he had no health insurance, money is a problem - and will likely continue to be for the foreseeable future. I only know him by reputation, but many of his friends (and friends of friends) have been involved with fund-raising efforts to help defray the costs of medical treatment. One of my own friends - sykii - is selling prints of her [quite wonderful] photos for the first time as part of this fund-raising effort. If you get a moment, please visit her journal (here), and see if you might be able to help out with this worthy cause. |

9:18p | :) alisanne's holiday fic is practically writing itself! I'm enjoying it a lot, even though it somehow seems very 'old school' Snarry--and somehow kind of cheesy, in a bad-fic plot kind of way. I only worry there's a lot of exposition, but . . . I like it that way. Again, old school. It feels like something that could--and should--have been written several years ago. It's not flawless, it's not elegant, but it's fun. |

10:49p | Weekend, where did you go? It's the end of a four-day weekend, and I feel totally robbed. I had so many plans for the weekend, and fighting this cold killed nearly all of them. I did manage to go shopping on Friday, and that was great. I got work clothes, a winter coat, and winter boots, all of which i needed. I bought one gift (not counting the new bed for the Sith kitties), and that was it. I did manage to get the Yule tree put up. ( Here's a pic ) That took about 5 hours given I'd lost the instructions to assemble the tree, and all the ornaments were scattered amongst various boxes. But yay, it's up, and I just love having it lit. I also managed to get up some energy for cleaning, but not the total reorganization of kitchen cupboards and bedroom dresser that I'd planned. I managed to vacuum and clean litter and the basics. Okay, and I managed to watch my way through all of Merlin. My, that's one slashy show. *g* I also got caught up on Boston Legal, My Own Worst Enemy, Bones, and Atlantis (my fave SGA ep in a long, long time). Show's that I watched and decided I'm pretty much done with: Fringe and The Mentalist. Fringe just feels too contrived, and the main character in The Mentalist strikes me as a completely unappealing. I couldn't sit through the one ep I tried to watch. That's a bummer because they're two shows I really wanted to like. Okay, off to bed now. Hoping I will wake up tomorrow magically well. Probably too many Merlin episodes. Current Mood:  pathetic |

9:41p | HikaGo recs. Vol. 2: Arboretum and Aja A Resolution of Territory, by Arboretum (has a sequel, A Pretty Good Year, but it's unavailable ATM) # Akira/Hikaru, NC-17, ~10K words. Brilliant all the way through and very amusing. While being highly advanced in Go and renown in the official Go world, Hikaru finds that he's very much behind in the areas of life that interest 'normal' teenagers the most. Namely, sex. Hikaru's Life-Changing Discoveries and Steps on the Way are accompanied with lots and lots of Go and relationship counselling from the unwilling Waya. That's the kind of fic that gives you real pleasure while you're reading and puts a happy smile on your face when you remember it. Awesome! Quote: They fight so loudly all the time eventually three different guests from three different countries all suggest imposing a restraining order on Hikaru. "No way," Hikaru and Touya say at the same time. Well, Hikaru says, "No way," and Touya stiffens up and says, "Absolutely not." Same thing, whatever. Waterloo, by Aja (bookshop) # Akira/Hikaru, PG-13, 8000 words. This story shows us a very interesting situation: Touya Jr. is on the brink of a victory which would better (much better) be a loss. One victory he's not ready for. Think of him and you'll know which victory it is. The way it's shown to us is, while not unheard of, interesting. Aja reveals necessary details one by one so that we construct the whole picture from them gradually. It's not a puzzle though, nor is it an annoying formal trick. Instead, it lets us connect to the characters and their emotions slowly and the more inevitably the more we learn. Wonderful piece, masterfully written and very intense. It will make you love the pairing and Go even more: how they work, what things mean between them, what the game is for them, what secrets they harbour and how those affect them, everything. Wonderful! |

I could have written all of them, but in the end chose your first choice. I changed it a little; I hope you don't mind but it worked better for me this way. So the messages from the book are spoken, not appearing on the page as they did in Riddle's diary. I tried to get most of the prompt in, and also some of your favoured kinks and hopefully none of your squicks. I also tried to avoid 'excessive' fluff, but had to give it a happy ending. So I'm doing twice as much but have given myself about half the time to do it in. *glee* I've heard some people work well under pressure, so I'm going to see how that works out for me this season. Today is caramel corn day, so I'll be whipping up about 12 or so batches since each takes one hour to cook with me jumping up every 15 minutes to stir it. In between I will be doing my "Black Friday" holiday shopping on-line and creating some art for the holiday cards I will be sending to those of you who asked for holiday cards this year. As it turns out, most of you *will* be getting my art on the cards since both Cafepress and Zazzle decided to be butt-holes and CANCEL MY ENTIRE ORDER due to "violations of copyright" that included MY OWN ARTWORK as well as art I commissioned and used with the full permission of the artists. Oh, and they waited until *today* to let me know. Not that this is annoying or anything. *stabittystabstab* But that means no magnets this year, though all special seekrit projects are still on-target. Still, I ♥ my magnets. *sobs* If I can work up something else, I will. Oh, well. If you would like a holiday card with my Snarry art, just go back and fill out the poll here on IJ or here on LJ.
